Do we defend the scriptures or the opinions of our pastors?

I have noticed a trend amongst many of today’s believers, a very shocking trend; we tend to defend the opinions of our pastors over the bible!

Many believers would certainly disagree with me, others would conclude that I have a problem. Either way, I believe it is the truth. Like I mentioned in one of my previous posts, I was involved in a series of email exchanges with a brother. He had written a piece on tithing (“here we go again”) which I had read through and thought it sounded so much like something I heard Kenneth Copeland say. A quick look at his blogroll confirmed my suspicions; Kenneth Copeland’s blog was on there.

I don’t intend to castigate anyone but this trend is becoming a cause for great concern. Kenneth Copeland’s idea on tithing is most certainly not scriptural (Don’t worry I know “touch not the Lord’s anointed”). He says amongst other things that tithing had been in existence since the Garden of Eden in the form of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. So when Adam and Eve ate the fruit, they were eating God’s tithe. What poppycock! How can a Christian read the bible and arrive at such an absurd conclusion? I pointed out to the brother that Kenneth Copeland’s take on the topic was unscriptural and out came “touch not the Lord’s anointed!”

He is certainly not the only one with misplaced loyalty and blind zeal; believers like this abound. They are so ready to spring to the defence of their pastors even when these pastors are wrong and I don’t think it pleases God.

One of the other many blogs I visit is Miriam’s blog, www.endtimespropheticwords.wordpress.com and she did a piece on the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) some time ago. You can read it here. She highlighted some of the practices of the church and to be honest these practises where truly questionable. But rather than weigh Miriam’s points against scriptures, threats were flowing freely. The anger of its faithfuls was simple “who are you to criticise our pastor?” They never bothered to search scriptures to see how their pastor’s sayings weighed against it.

This kind of attitude is becoming quite wide spread and to be honest this is how cults are born! Since no one is allowed to point out when these “men of God” err and simple minded folks who are just not bothered to search their scriptures hang onto their every word, error and false doctrine is right at the door and such a group stops being a church and starts becoming a cult.

If you are reading this, before you call the entire troop of hell against me, ask yourself this question, “who is my allegiance to?” Is your zeal for God or your pastor? Do you weigh everything they preach against God’s word? Do you have stacks of cds of your favourite preachers and never bother to check all they preach against scripture? I am not advocating rebellion or rudeness but we need to know where our priorities lie and draw the line. Such blind followership has caused a lot of people their lives with followers of Jim Jones, David Koresh and Yahweh ben Yahweh as some of such examples.

No man is infallible, no man is above mistakes. And when we hold onto the words of our pastors without validating them against scripture, we have begun to walk in error!

Now I know the significance of Abraham’s tithe to Melchizedek

I have found out that I have been writing so much on tithing of recent. Bro.  Wes of the Kingdom advisors website also pointed that out. But when you think that you have written all there is about the subject, new inspirations come to mind and one cannot help but write.

I have often wondered why Abraham’s encounter with Melchizedek was included in scripture. It seemed like a statement mentioned in passing without much significance attached to it. Was I wrong! Unfortunately though, this encounter has formed the basis for the doctrine of tithe and the school of thought that it is still relevant to today’s church. Here is an article that proves otherwise. Is tithing valid for today’s church because Abraham “practiced” it before the law?

Some weeks ago, I had a series of email exchanges with a pro-tither and we just did not seem to agree on the issue. Him, just like all otherpro-tithers I have met truly believe that without practicing this rite you cannot attract God’s blessings. And all of them look to Abraham as reason it is still valid in today’s church because Abraham did it before the law.

The question, I would like to ask though is ‘was tithing the only thing practiced by Abraham before the law?’ Abraham practiced animal sacrifices, polygamy, circumcision amongst other things. Would they all be valid in today’s church because they were all done before the law? Am sorry but pro-tithers are not being honest in their use of scriptures. You cannot take one and leave the others, it is either all or non.

While I pondered on, a thought crossed my mind which I really would like to share. The arguments that pro-tithers use to support the tithe doctrine could well be used to build a case for the doctrine of circumcision. Mind you God never gave Abraham the charge to tithe nether did he commend him for doing it but God commanded Abraham to practice circumcision. It was the condition of God’s covenant with him. Let us look at Genesis 17

7And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.

8And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land
wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting
possession; and I will be their God.

9And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations.

10This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.

11And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.

12And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed.

13He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.

14And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.

Circumcision was clearly practiced by Abraham and his descendants well before the law, it even saved the life of Moses in Exodus 4.

All of the above may have been the arguments put forward by those Jews who came from Judea and taught that the Gentiles could only be saved if they practiced circumcision. Now how does this differ from saying that you have to tithe to prosper? It is the same line of argument. But what did Paul have to say about it?

1Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

2Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.

3For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.

4Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.

5For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.

6For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love. Galatians 5

If we replace the word circumcision with tithe, it will still read correctly. And please do not bring Malachi 3: 10 into the mix, it simply does not apply.

To promote tithing is to reject grace and embrace the law and when you do this you make yourself the child of the bond woman and not of the free.

And Just as the children of the bond woman persecuted the children of the free, those who tithe glory in their flesh and persecute those who do not tithe. And it is a pity!

Please stop this childishness and flagrant display of foolishness. You cannot win God’s favour, you cannot earn God’s blessings either. The good Lord would always provide your needs and you do not have to bribe Him first.

“You need to tithe and give in order to prosper!” Really? How come Hetty Green did not get the memo?

Some of us might have heard of Hetty Green while others might not. To those who have never heard about her, who was she?
Hetty Green
Hetty Green was an astute business woman who amassed a large fortune and died the world’s wealthiest woman in 1916. However, she was very, very stingy. Wikipedia tells us more

Green was mainly interested in business, and there are many tales (of various degrees of accuracy) about her stinginess. She never turned on the heat nor used hot water. She wore one old black dress and undergarments that she changed only after they had been worn out. She did not wash her hands and rode an old carriage. She ate mostly pies that cost fifteen cents. One tale claims that she spent a night looking around her home for a lost stamp worth two cents.

How stingy can one be? There is even more to come

Her frugality extended to family life. Her son Ned broke his leg as a child, and Hetty tried to have him admitted in a hospital charity ward. When she was recognized, she stormed away vowing to treat the wounds herself. The leg contracted gangrene and had to be amputated – he ended up with a cork prosthesis

What a miser!

An estimate of her net worth was around $100 – $200 million (or $1.9 – $3.8 billion in 2006 dollars), arguably making her the richest woman in the world at the time.

“Why the history lesson and how does this relate to tithing and giving?” Someone might ask, be patient and you will see.

I have been in the pentecostal church all my adult life and in all this time I heard it preached constantly that in order to prosper, you need to be a giver and a tither. I practised these “rites” religiously and great wealth never materialised! At times lack of faith was to blame other times it was sin. We were even told that you also needed to “sow seeds” in the lives of men of God and God would prosper you big time. Ironically, it was only the man of God that seemed to prosper from these seeds sown.

I decided to look at scriptures that had been provided to support these doctrines in great detail and my discoveries astounded me.

There are universal laws that are binding on everybody whether you believe in them on not. An example of such a law is – what goes up, must come down. This law is not selective and does not only affect those who believe in it – it affects everyone on planet earth. This leads me to this question – if tithing and giving were gateways to prosperity, how come Hetty Green was so wealthy even in her stinginess and loads of Christians who tithe and give faithfully still live from paycheck to paycheck? Something is obviously amiss!

Scriptures have been distorted and twisted so that churches would continue to have a steady revenue stream. Half-truths, lies, fear and arm-twisting techniques are used to continuously extort money from believers.

To start with, while running the risk of sounding like a broken record, Abraham’s encounter with Melchizedek is cited as one of the reasons tithing is still relevant to today’s church because he did it before the law. What deceit! What ignorance! What adding to scriptures! Abraham was already very wealthy before he ever met Melchizedek. Even Lot with him was also wealthy hence they separated in Genesis 13 – the land could no longer sustain both men because of their great wealth! Why on earth would people deliberately turn a blind eye to scriptural evidence and formulate one of their own. Genesis 13: 2 tells us that Abraham was very rich. He had not even met Melchizedek then not to talk of tithing to prosper.

The one that really gets to me is the doctrine of sowing seeds. We are advised by these preachers to “sow seeds” i.e. give money to them because they are fertile ground and God would bless us. Verses of scripture are twisted and taken completely out of context in order to lean weight to this doctrine.

What exactly does scripture mean by sowing and reaping? Very simple – you would be treated exactly the same way you treat others! If you are cruel to others, They would be cruel to you in return. If you are generous to others, they would be generous to you in return. Scripture never tells us that “sowing” money guarantees you “reap” a harvest of money – that is gambling. God is not a slot machine! They deceive you by telling you that sowing refers to giving money, not true according to scriptures!

One scripture used to support this is the parable of the sower. Let us quickly look at it from the New Living Translation of the Holy Scriptures

3 He told many stories in the form of parables, such as this one:

“Listen! A farmer went out to plant some seeds. 4 As he scattered them across his field, some seeds fell on a footpath, and the birds came and ate them. 5 Other seeds fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The seeds sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow. 6 But the plants soon wilted under the hot sun, and since they didn’t have deep roots, they died. 7 Other seeds fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants. 8 Still other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they produced a crop that was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been planted! 9 Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.” Mathew 13 : 3 – 9.

Jesus used this to illustrate how the word of God thrives in different hearts that receive it same as a seed planted would thrive or die depending on the type of soil it is planted in. Any reference to money here? No! Any reference to giving here? No as well! Even if we decide to look at the parable literary, one would struggle to see how it relates to giving or money and this brings me to the truth about prosperity – It does not come through giving! The life of the miserly Hetty Green shows us that much. Wealth comes by investments and smart business sense! The farmer in Jesus’ parable did not go from house to house giving away his planting seeds in the name of sowing into the lives of people. Had he done that, his field would have been completely empty come harvest time. Instead he went to INVEST in his farm by planting his seeds and he reaped a harvest from his INVESTMENT.

What investments do you have? How do you spend your money? How do you spend your spare time? No one ever became wealthy by tithing, “sowing seeds” or giving, there is no scriptural evidence to back that up. You need to get busy and God would bless the works of your hand. He will bless your investments same as he did to Isaac during the famine.

I am sure some people would come away with the notion that I am opposed to giving, for those people I suggest you read this paper in context. The context of this write up is debunking the claim that giving and tithing makes you prosperous and not to dissuade people from giving.

If you want to give, give because you want to and not because you are hoping to receive some money rain or have been taken in by this false doctrine.

Is tithing really putting God first?

Quite recently, I discovered that I have been blogging on tithing quite a lot. Just when I think that there is nothing more to say about the topic since it seems all has been said about it some new thoughts cross my mind.

It is really a pity that a lot of Christians would rather starve, put their families at risk and run into debt in the name of putting God first through tithing. Their minds have been conditioned to believe that spending their money on themselves first and “giving to God” from what is left is a sin but is that what scripture really says?

The way I see it, I think that these believers have a very hard time reconciling the New Testament to their Christian beliefs and tend to model their beliefs after the Old Testament by introducing elements of works instead of relying on faith alone.

How does tithing indicate that you are truly putting God first? Can we substantiate this with any scriptural evidence? The answer is a resounding no. This is another man-made doctrine. Tithing does not in anyway show that you are putting God first rather it is the way you live your life that reflects if you put God first in everything.

What choices do you make in your everyday life? These choices indicate if you love God or not. Before you embark on any activity, do you seek God’s opinion on the matter or would rather have it your way? Would you like to receive God’s guidance every step of the way or are you scared that if you ask Him, you might not like what he tells you to do. Aha! This is when the tyre actually hits the road and the journey really begins. Obedience is tough! Total obedience to every single precept of God is putting Him first!

Why was God not impressed at the initiative shown by Saul when he decided to spare the choice livestock in order to offer them up as burnt offerings? Lets look at it from scripture

And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 1 Samuel 15: 22.

If this scenario was to replay itself in today’s church run by pro-tithers, what would be their response? They will most certainly commend Saul’s actions and sing his praises from the pulpit.

What is indeed putting God first? Would you wait for His choice of a spouse for you or would you rather go it alone? Would you turn down that lucrative job offer because you did not receive a release in your spirit to take it or would you shun the still small voice by promising a tithe? How about the way you treat your neighbours, your colleagues and people you meet daily. Do they see the evidence of a life of Christ in you? How about when you are offended? Do you retaliate? Do you press charges? Do you sue? Would you cheat on your spouse if given the chance? What are your thoughts about others? Are you compassionate or judgemental? Do you readily forgive?

It is so easy to give a tenth but total obedience to God’s precepts is the difficult bit but that is actually putting Him FIRST!

Tithes, Melchizedek, Abraham and the book of Malachi

Man has always been intrigued by mysteries. Conspiracy theories have been the bread and butter of many. There are numerous interests in UFOs and alien life forces that have even given birth to a lot of religions and cult followings.

Christianity too also has its fair share of mystery hunters. They are those who like to occupy a position of relevance in christiandom and one of the ways they do this is to promote gibberish in the name of mysteries of God. One of such funny so-called mysteries has been the coming of Christ and the revelation of the son of perdition. They try very hard to bend certain scriptures to suit their preconceived ideas about current global events. Even though we can see from scripture that the end of days lies in the hand of God, these false alarmists still carry on deceiving many.

Melchizedek too has also been the subject of a lot of ‘bible mysteries’. A lot has been said and is still being said about his person. Most of these theories are the fabrications of pro-tithers just to make their doctrine of tithing seem valid.

For once why don’t we just accept what scriptures say without trying to second guess and fill in the blank spaces with our little minds. Has it ever occurred to us these blanks were the deliberate hand work of our invincible God? Scriptures say that the hidden things belong to God but what has been revealed belongs to men.

The most common defense in support of this abhorrent practice of tithing is that it precedes the law through Abraham’s encounter with the mysterious Melchizedek. And in a bid to give it some out of this world holier than thou status, a lot of divine properties are apportioned to Melchizedek. Mortal man! How can you know more than what has been written in scripture? Why promote your own ideas and try to colour it with bits of scripture in order to make it seem like it was the good Lord speaking?

Now before we continue looking at Melchizedek, let us first of all look at the commonly held belief behind this doctrine of tithing. We are told that in order to invoke God’s blessing, every believer has to faithfully set aside a tenth of their monthly income because it belongs to God. Failure to do so will make God release the devourer on our lives and our finances and Malachi 3: 10 is used to buttress this point. But if we try to raise the objection that tithing is a Jewish old testament practice, we are told that we are wrong because Abraham did it before the law. This argument sounds like the argument of a bunch of confused people who are desperately trying to force new wine into old wineskins and what happens when we do that? The wineskins spilt and all the new wine is lost.

I will use an example to make my point. I will assume that we all at some point in our lives have gone to the shops to buy something which when we took home found that it was defective. Let me use a dvd player as an example. If we went to the shops to buy a dvd player which costs £50.00 and we took it home and discovered it was faulty, when we take it back to the shop we purchased it from, we are either given a full refund or a like for like exchange. We cannot be given a £60.00 refund when we only paid £50.00 neither would we be given a £100.00 dvd in exchange when we only brought back a £50.00 dvd. You may be wondering where I am going to with this, the answer is simple – the defense of the tithing doctrine is nothing more than trying to claim a £100.00 refund for the £50.00 you spent! All the scriptural references are simply not like for like thus violating the golden rule of the bible – out of the mouth of two or three witnesses every word is established. Let me explain.

In order to escape the fact that tithing is an old testament principle, we bring Abraham and Melchizedek into the mix. But the way we practice tithing bears no semblance to the way Abraham did his. How can we then say we are following his example? Abraham never tithed to rebuke the devourer neither did he tithe to receive God’s blessings. He was already blessed!

Genesis 13: 1 & 2 tells us that much
1AndAbram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the south.

2And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold.

This knocks out the theory that tithing invokes God’s blessings. It certainly did not do the same for Abraham. Though pro-tithers still try to say that it must have been practiced habitually by Abraham. If it was, the bible would have mentioned it but it didn’t and this is not an error but a deliberate act of the Almighty God.

And this brings me to the raging question, who is this mysterious man called Melchizedek? The answer is very very simply – WE DO NOT KNOW! The only thing we know about him is that he was the king of Salem and was also a high priest and his name meant king of righteousness. Nothing more is said about him. Why? I haven’t the foggiest! People say he was Christ, well scripture never tells us that much. And rather than try to fashion out plausible explanations which lack biblical support, why don’t we just stay within the boundaries of what has been written and accept that the story surrounding him was written that way deliberately by God? But then even if we are to go along with the assumption that he (Melchizedek) was Christ then our practice of tithing has to be like for like i.e. we would have to give our tithes physically to Jesus and not through any intermediaries. That would be following Abraham’s example.

Abraham’s tithe versus tithes in the book of Malachi

I still do not understand why pro-tither lump Abraham’s tithe and the tithes in the book of Malachi together. They should not even be mentioned in the same sentence! You cannot have it both ways you either pick Abraham’s tithe and stick with it or you pick Malachi’s and stick with it. You cannot use Malachi’s tithe to support Abraham’s tithes, they are different and most certainly not like for like!

Abraham’s tithe was not done to rebuke the devourer, it was not done to sustain the priesthood neither was it done to provide food for the storehouse. It was done freely and voluntarily and this shows that there would have been no penalty for not doing it and there certainly was no reward for doing it either.

The tithe in Malachi on the other hand refers to the tithes of the law. It is linked to the priesthood and the storehouse. It was instituted as a means of supporting the Levitical priesthood as well as the poor and less privileged. It was not practiced by everybody in Israel only by farmers and it was not from spoils of war. Hence the mention of the priests and the storehouse something completely absent in Abraham’s. Like for like remember?

Don’t kid yourself that you are following Abraham’s example, you are completely wide of the mark. Don’t use Melchizedek as a reason to support it, there is simply not enough information about him for us to make wonderful conclusions. And don’t use Malachi 3: 10 to buttress your point, it refers to the Mosaic tithes which you all admit we are not under.

Where does that live us and the tithe? No where! It is simply not relevant to today’s church.

Study to show thyself – tithes and the brazen serpent

5And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.

6And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

7Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.

8And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.

9And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived. (Num 21: 5 – 9)

I am sure you may be wondering what relationship exists between the brazen serpent and tithes, well we will soon find out.

In the above portion of scripture, the children of Israel murmured against God and Moses prompting God to send serpents into their midst. When they repented God asked Moses to make the brazen serpent and lift it up onto a pole so anyone who looks at it shall live and it was so.

The children of Israel must have found it truly amazing and may have begun to think to themselves that the brazen serpent might hold a lot of power. So much so that their descendants began to worship it and burn incense to it.

He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan. 2 Kings 18: 4 .

They may have tried to justify their actions, twisting bits of scriptures to support this abhorrent practice. To the uninformed, they may have produced a good argument –”looking at the serpent saved our ancestors! The serpent definitely possesses divine powers!” That may have been their thinking.

Anytime scriptures are taken completely out of context we would always have occurrences like this. Rather than look to understanding God’s mind for today, we tend build shrines out of past moves of God. Before long, we slip into idolatry holding these past moves above God Himself.

Tithing has become a modern day brazen serpent! No doubt that at the time God commanded it tremendous blessings came to those who obeyed. But today something bigger than that is present – The sacrifice of Jesus! This sacrifice has replaced the need to perform different ceremonial acts to gain God’s favour. You are protected because of the blood, your needs are met because of the blood, you are part of God’s family because of the blood, you receive favour because of the blood and it is something you obtain by grace and not by observing a so called “eternal principle”.

This so called principle has completely taken the place of God in the hearts of many. Those that demand it as a requirement for church membership are in grave error, others that claim that God only prospers you, heal you or meet your needs only when you tithe are guilty of distorting scriptures.

If God made no such assertions in scripture, then am afraid we are burning incense to the brazen serpent if we promote this so called doctrine.

Study to show thyself – Do firstfruits refer to tithes?

There seem to be a bit of confusion as to what firstfruits are. Quite a number of people actually believe it means tithes. This error has given rise to a lot of false teachings surrounding tithes.

What are firstfruits? Some say it is the best and choicest part of what you earn. Others, say it is any increase you have experienced e.g. if you were unemployed and you suddenly got a job that pays you £2000, then the £2000 is said to be your firstfruits.

Can all be the above definitions of firstfruits be found in the bible? The Smith’s bible dictionary gives us the following references:

  1. The law ordered in general that the first of all ripe fruits and of liquors, or, as it is twice expressed, the first of first-fruits, should be offered in God’s house. (Exodus 22:29; 23:19; 34:27) It was an act of allegiance to God as the giver of all. No exact quantity was commanded, but it was left to the spiritual and moral sense of each individual.
  2. On the morrow after the passover sabbath, i.e. on the 16th of Nisan, a sheaf of new corn was to be brought to the priest and waved before the altar, in acknowledgment of the gift of fruitfulness. (Leviticus 2:12; 23:5,6,10,12)
  3. At the expiration of seven weeks from this time, i.e. at the feast of pentecost, an oblation was to be made from the new flour, which were to be waved in like manner with the passover sheaf. (Exodus 34:22; Leviticus 23:15,17; Numbers 28:26)
  4. The feast of ingathering, i.e. the feast of tabernacles, in the seventh month, was itself an acknowledgment of the fruits of the harvest. (Exodus 23:16; 34:22; Leviticus 23:39) These four sorts of offerings were national. Besides them, the two following were of an individual kind.
  5. A cake of the first dough that was baked was to be offered as a heave-offering. (Numbers 15:19,21)
  6. The first-fruits of the land were to be brought in a basket to the holy place of God’s choice, and there presented to the priest, who was to set the basket down before the altar. (26:2-11) The offerings were the perquisite of the priests. (Numbers 18:11; 18:4) Nehemiah, at the return from captivity, took pains to reorganize the offerings of first-fruits of both kinds, and to appoint places to receive them. (Nehemiah 10:35,37; 12:44) An offering of first-fruits is mentioned as an acceptable one to the prophet Elisha. (2 Kings 4:42)

Does any of the above six descriptions of firstfruits marry up with the general belief of many? Definitely not! The firstfruit was not 10%. Firstfruits, like tithe referred only to food items and agricultural produce and never to money. Can any of the six points raised above be applied to money? Hardly! Can we conveniently apply the commonly held belief of it being the choicest and best to money? How can you determine the choicest part of £2000? Are you going to break it down into all the denominations of the British pound and offer the highest? Where would you even begin?

The misconception occurs from the misapplication of Proverbs 3: 9 and we would look at it from the New Living Translation

9 Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce.

10 Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine.

There is no reference to money and tithe was not even hinted (some use this scripture to justify the doctrine of tithing). It referred to agricultural produce.

For today’s believer, firstfruits mean something different – Christ!

But now is Christ risen from the dead, [and] become the firstfruits of them that slept. 1 Cr 15:20

But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming. 1 Cr 15: 23

He represents, as the firstfruits, the rest of the believers who shall share in the blessed hope of resurrection. The harvest is ripe, Christ as the firstfruit has been offered up to God and in the fullness of time the rest of the harvest, us as believers, shall be offered up onto God.

Misconceptions in scripture usually arise when people try to bend it to suit their personal beliefs. The truth is revealed in scripture but the personal opinions of man have greatly distorted this, giving rise to a different Gospel.

Because a thing sounds good, doesn’t mean that it is God ordained. Search scriptures properly and let it speak for itself.

2 Tim 4:3,4

I do apologise well in advance if I sound a bit judgemental with this post but I assure you, that is in no way my intention.

Naturally, I have a very inquisitive mind and because of this I like to know about things and how they work. When I first became a Christian, I was led to believe that being this inquisitive and trying to validate everything taught from the pulpit with God’s word was a sin. So as not to keep ‘sinning’, I accepted everything taught from the pulpit without asking any questions but there were too many inconsistencies. And the time came when I could no longer ignore these inconsistencies and was left quite confused for a period of time before God intervened with the truth of His word.

My past experience made me see that there are some Christians who rather prefer to be lied to than to be told the truth. They would much rather believe the lie that has no scriptural backing just as long as it makes them feel comfortable than believe the truth even when it is presented with overwhelming evidence from scripture. Some are very zealous for God no doubt but this zeal is not at all backed up with knowledge. Others are just simply ignorant and do not know any better.

In the past few days, I have been having a series of conversation with some pro-tithers and discovered something really interesting – a lot of them believe the doctrine because it makes them feel comfortable and not because it can be proven from scripture. It doesn’t matter that the mere logic of the doctrine goes against the very grain of grace which the new testament preaches but they are fine with the twisting and wresting of scriptures by these new age preachers. And instead of adapting to suit the gospel, they adapt the gospel to suit themselves. Was this how it was in the early church? Not at all!

My study of church history made me see how today’s church differs from the early church. People did not become believers because of what they stood to gain. Their faith was not anchored on the false promises of bigger houses, bigger cars, wealth and power. When Peter addressed the crowd on the day of Pentecost, scriptures say they were convicted and asked what they should do and the answer was simple

Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; Acts 3:19.

And the people gave their lives to Christ. There was neither promise of wealth nor promise of physical blessings. Even though a lot of them lost their lives for the sake of the Gospel. In all of this, the church still forged ahead because their love for God was not based on the promise of receiving any physical blessings.

Things changed when the Roman emperor, Constantine became a Christian. Christianity was made the official religion and people were promised white robes and a piece of gold if they joined the church and of course people joined in droves. And the gospel was adapted to suit the pagan practices of the people in a bid to make it more appealing. And it does not appear to have changed much today.

During the reformation, the Protestants left the Catholic Church and more Orthodox Church denominations were formed but still took with them elements of the Catholic Church they protested against.

Over time there was another mass exodus from the orthodox churches when the Pentecostal churches arrived on the scene. These churches were very dynamic and vibrant. They brought with them their own brand of the gospel and for the first time people saw Christianity as means to financial gain. No thanks to the Word of Faith movement! Pure bible doctrine was replaced with personal convictions, personal opinions and personal revelations. And like my brother Lionel at gospelin3d says, many churches nowadays have become more like business enterprises. With every church promoting its own USP.

Sermons are no longer delivered to change lives but are repackaged to appeal to everybody. And just like 2 Timothy 4: 3 says, many people are more interested in hearing fables than endure sound doctrine, so they troop en mass to these churches to hear words that tantalise their ears. Sweet nothings leading nowhere!

Now what do we have? A completely rewritten gospel! A pseudo gospel completely devoid of biblical doctrine but filled with personal opinions.

If they knew the true gospel, why would anybody believe that God is up for sale? Why would you believe that a mere mortal that decides to give God a 10% tithe could control Him? When will we ever learn that we are not the ones in control, God is! That is why there is no power in what is preached today because it is merely enticing words of man’s wisdom.

Com’on, giving tithes and offerings does not change God’s attitude towards you. Attending every church service does not make God love you more than He already does, that is legalism. Who has known the mind of God that he may instruct Him? Why are you trying to justify yourself before God with your works instead of accepting Christ’s justification?

You can never have a successful relationship with anybody by observing a set of rules; God is no different. The bible enjoins us to come boldly into His presence. The sacrifice of Jesus has paved a way for us into the Holy of Holies.

1 Corinthians 13: 1 teaches us to do things out of love and not for personal gain. Do not give offerings with the intention of getting back but give because you love to. Do not attend church services because you have been told an angel moves around distributing blessings to only those who attend but because you love to fellowship with the brethren.

Reject this gospel of personal gain and embrace the gospel of selfless love.

Study to show thyself – Tithing and the parable of the talents

A lot has been written and still is being written on the subject of tithing. For a lot of churches it is a requirement for membership, leadership etc. Meticulous tithe records are kept and those who do not tithe are usually berated and publicly ridiculed.

The promise of the tithe is – tithe and you will always have everything in abundance but when this abundance is not forth coming you are then told that tithing is a form of sacrifice that shows your love for God. In other words if you do not tithe you do not love God. That is blackmail undoubtedly.

The focus of this post is not on the legalities of tithing per say but on how it relates to the parable of the talents.

In Mathew 25: 15 – 30, Jesus tells a parable which He likens to the Kingdom of heaven. This parable was of a man whom before travelling to a far country delivered his goods to his servants; to one he gave five talents, two to another and one to the last, each according to their abilities. On his return, he was pleased that he who was given five had made five more; he who was given two had made two more and was angry with him that was given one and brought it back. How does this relate to tithing you may ask? In more ways than you can imagine. Those that promote the practise of tithing tell you that 10% of what you earn is God’s and the rest of the 90% is yours. How true is this? Quite untrue I dare say. The entire 100% you earn belongs to God and He chose to give it to you to see how good a steward you would be with His money. Do not forget that He is the one that gives you the power to make wealth.

The parable of the talents was all about stewardship. The master was pleased with the servants that multiplied the talents given them but was angry with the servant that gave back what was originally given him. What does this tell us? It tells us that God is more interested in the way you spend the entire 100% than in getting a 10% from you. And because some believers are not disciplined in the way they spend money, they are still broke even though they tithe faithfully.

Let me use this illustration to buttress my point. When I was a lot younger, my dad used to give my siblings and I a weekly pocket allowance. He had taken into consideration the amount of money we would likely need to meet our needs for the week such as money for transportation, mobile phone bills etc. Lets say I decide to show to my dad that I love him so much by giving him back 10% of what he originally gave to me, am sure he will be very pleased. If my dad suddenly discovers that I have been struggling to pay my mobile phone bill and have accumulated a huge debt because the 10% I had given to him made it impossible for me to meet my weekly obligations, do you think he will be pleased? Of course not! He would expect me to show a lot more common sense. Let us also imagine that I am able to use the remaining 90% quite well and begin to indulge myself spending frivolously I do not think my dad would be pleased with that either. Also, if I show great responsibility with the 90% spending wisely my dad would certainly be pleased and could quite likely increase my allowance because he knows I am responsible with money.

Good stewardship is all that God requires. If you are heavily in debt and tithing becomes impossibly, God expects you to show common sense by trying to get yourself out of debt. Tithing while in debt and hoping that God would consider it an act of sacrifice and automatically wipe off all your debts is nothing short of wishful thinking. Why did you get into debt in the first place? In the same vane, tithing when you have not paid your bills too does not show good judgement. These are bills you would still have to pay sooner or later and if you choose to pay later you may end up paying more because you may have accrued charges. Why risk bankruptcy in trying to show that you love God? That would no longer be freedom in Christ but a legalistic bondage.

The book of Proverbs 3: 9 admonishes us to honour God with our wealth in other words let the way we manage all He has blessed us with bring honour to HIM. I don’t think bankruptcy brings Him honour.

If you decide that you would like to give God 10% of your monthly earnings there is nothing wrong with that as long as it is something you can afford. Don’t give him 10% and waste the remaining 90% on bank charges, unpaid bills or wasteful spending, that would be very unprofitable.
